Push Reel Mowers, Real Benefits

Written by JeffreyRichard on Monday, September 8th, 2008 in Gardening.

I remember as a young child, trying to mow our small front yard with a reel push mower. I remember my dad made it look so easy but as a kid, I couldn’t wait for the day I could get a mower with a motor! Well, guess what, now I want a push reel mower again! And as luck would have it, there are plenty to choose from.

Yes, whether you call them push reel mowers ,push mowers, old fashioned mowers, or just manual mowers, they are making a big comeback. Many people have never seen a push reel mower, maybe on an old episode of Leave It To Beaver, but that’s about it. Consider some of the benefits these push reel mowers provide.

They’re Green. Gas powered lawn mowers are a major contributor to emissions. The engines on most gas mowers are very basic and contribute to pollution. Once a push reel mowers is manufactured, the pollution it produces is gone. Push reel mowers provide clean pollution free mowing. They also put out little noise pollution, just a peaceful whurr. Can you imagine mowing your front lawn at 5:00 am without disturbing your neighbors?

They’re Economical. I never thought mowing my lawn was an expensive task, until gas hit $4 a gallon. I used to be able to fill my gas can with pocket change, now I use my credit card. Push reel mowers run on a renewable resource, you! Push reel mowers are available under $100 and need very little maintenance and always start on the firs pull or, push if you will. As for service, you may need to oil them here and there and sharpen the blades every so often, but you never need to change the oil or replace a broken starter rope. It has also been my experience, that most of my gas mowers have only lasted a year or to before the motor gives out. I know it is partially my fault for not changing oil, plugs an filters or draining the gas in the fall, but who remembers all of that stuff?

They give a free workout. We have spent so many years trying to make things easier for ourselves that we now have it to easy and have to pay to get a good work out. Push reel mowers will give you a nice low impact work out at your own pace.

Your lawn will love it. A good sharp reel mower will leave your lawn in beautiful shape. If you wear your old steel golf spikes, you will can aerate your lawn at the same. Speaking of golf, many golf courses use a form of a reel mower to keep their grass in top shape. You can even get bagger attachments for many of the models although, they tend to cut the grass into fairly small clippings.

While push reel mowers may not be for everyone, many smaller lawns and their owners, not to mention our planet and our economy can benefit.

Choose from a large variety of push reel mowers and reel mowers here and go green today!

10 Weed Prevention Tips

Written by CarrieWykeham on Friday, September 5th, 2008 in Gardening.

Weeds are a gardener’s nightmare and can really spoil your enjoyment of you garden. A gardener’s dream is to have a lush, green lawn and neat, colourful borders all free from weeds. It is said that prevention is better than cure, and this is certainly true for weeds. Let weeds take hold in your garden and you will always be fighting them, and it will always be a struggle. Weeding out established weeds can be a backbreaking task, prevention is definitely the key.

Follow the following tips to help prevent weeds invading and taking hold in your garden.

1. Tackle weeds or grass sprouting up between paving slabs immediately – Either use a good weedkiller to kill them or use an old knife to prise them out. Don’t let them spread. Re-point any gaps with cement to stop them growing through again.

2. Membrane – If you are starting with an empty border or flower bed, you could lay down weed membrane, black plastic from a mulch sack (perforated for drainage) or a layer of newspaper or old carpet to prevent weeds taking root or pushing their way through. Polypropylene is best because it is water permeable and you can just cut into it to plant new plants. Cover with mulch, bark chippings, weed-free straw or gravel.

3. Mulch – Bark chippings are light and so have a tendency to blow around the garden, gravel can get on your lawn and wreck your lawnmower, so using mulch is a good idea. Buy mulch from a garden centre or use horse manure or home-made compost. Put a thick layer on top of the soil, or membrane, at least 5-10cm deep. Keep an eye on it, you will need to keep topping it up, especially if cats scratch at it.

4. Vertical barriers – Burying a vertical barrier, such as damp-proof course, plastic or a sheet of metal, can prevent root weeds such as Japanese Knotweed invading your borders. The barrier needs to be buried at least 30cm deep to be effective.

5. Weed regularly – Keeping an eye on your borders and flower beds and removing weeds before they get a real hold is much easier than tackling a 3 metre high Japanese Knotweed!

6. Weed when the soil is wet – It is much easier to pull weeds out of wet soil than hard dry soil.

7. Learn about lawn care – Adjusting your lawnmower blades to cut at the right height, fertilizing the lawn, aerating your lawn etc. will help to keep your lawn healthy and weed free. A dense lawn will be less prone to weeds.

8. Learn about weeds – Knowing the difference between annual weeds, biennial weeds and perennial weeds will help you to identify the most effective way of dealing with weeds.

9. Take care when planting – Check the rootballs and soil of plants you buy from garden centres, you don’t want to introduce weeds into a weed-free border! If you are not sure whether there are any seeds or weeds in the rootball, isolate the plant in a pot for a while before planting.

10. Keep things clean – Keep garden tools and your lawnmower clean so that you do not spread any weed seeds around the garden.

This fast growing weed is considered to be amongst the most invasive weeds in the UK, and is responsible for substantive damage and destruction to lawns, walls and buildings and the environment.

Tips on How to Save Money on Your Log Cabin for the Garden

Written by CraigWatson on Thursday, September 4th, 2008 in Gardening.

Log cabins can be expensive regardless of whether you are building it yourself or having someone else construct it for you. While money is not an issue for some people, it is certainly a major issue for most. Luckily, there are several ways you can save money so you can enjoy your very own log home. And with the beauty and comfort a cabin can bring to you, it is certainly something you do not want to pass up because of money issues.

The first place you want to start is with the design of your log home. Draw out a plan of what you want your cabin to look like in regards to the floor plan. How big do you want it and what kinds of design are you looking for? Once you have a generic layout of what you are looking for, you will want to send this to several different log home companies of your choice.

The log home companies will then be able to advise you for where you can save money at and give you quotes for kit prices. It is important you remember the more complex the layout is, the more money it will cost. The more corners there are in the foundation, the more complex the roof is, and the more windows there are, the more you can expect to pay.

Obviously, you can save a great deal of money building the log cabin on your own if you choose to. It will be a lot of work and can be quite time consuming, which is difficult if you work a full time job. But it is a great way to cut down on the cost of getting a cabin.

In addition to building the cabin yourself, you can also save money by acting as your own general contractor. Acting as your own general contractor can save you as much as 15 percent of the cost you would have to spend getting a cabin. That is a lot of money when it comes time to pay the bills. Of course, you do have to realize that there are a lot of headaches that come with this. But it is a great way to save money.

The next thing you want to be cautious of is your building lot. You want to select the building lot carefully as there are several things that can add to the overall cost. Things like how long your drive way will be, how much grading will be involved, what kinds of removal will be needed in regards to tree stumps and rocks and so on. Things like this can quickly jump the overall price of your log home.

If you are looking to store things at your cabin as well, it can save you a lot of money to build a crawl space over a basement. While it does seem like a basement would be cheaper because of the cheap floor space, you can actually save as much as $15,000 by eliminating a basement from your floor plan. Remember, you are trying to enjoy a beautiful cabin while still being able to afford it.

The last thing you want to look at is the price of windows and doors. There is a wide variety in price when it comes to material and style. You can save a lot of money by sticking to a certain kind of model. Also, plan out how many doors and windows you will need. You may be able to qualify for a truck load discount.

There is no question that it can be expensive to build a log cabin. However, you do not want money to be the reason why you cannot enjoy a comfortable and relaxing cabin. Take the tips in this article into consideration so you can save money on your log home.

How To Attract Hummingbirds And Hummingbird Nectar Recipe

Written by JanetAshby on Thursday, September 4th, 2008 in Gardening.

Humming birds are found throughout the Americas including the Caribbean. Known for their hovering ability and unique ability to fly backwards, humming birds hover by rapidly flapping their wings at speeds up to 80 times a second. The Bee Hummingbird is the smallest bird in the world at only 2 inches long and around 1.8 grams. The Giant Hummingbird is the largest hummingbird at 24 grams and approximately 8 inches long.

They have the fastest metabolism of any birds and to sustain this they must eat their own weight and more in food daily. To do this they must visit hundreds of blooms a day to harvest the nectar. They have long bills and tongues to reach deep into flowers. They are able to slow down their metabolisms when at rest, unlike most other high metabolism animals and this extends their lifespan which has been reported to be up to 17 years.

A Hummingbird Friendly Garden

To attract humming birds to your garden plant brightly coloured flowers and shrubs. Hummingbirds have very little sense of smell but are attracted to bright colours. Hanging a hummingbird feeder in your garden or on your patio will attract these lovely birds. Annuals to plant include beard tongue, salvia, petunia, jewelweed, jacobinia, impatiens, and firespike. Perennial plants to attract hummingbirds include foxglove, hosta, hummingbird mint, lupine, yucca, cardinal flower, bee balm, canna and columbine. For trees and shrubs choose azalea, buddleia, cape honeysuckle, mimosa, weigela, flame acanthus, lantana, red buckeye and tree tobacco.

Do not use pesticides in your garden as, not only will they kill bugs and insects that the hummingbirds eat but any residue left on flowers could be ingested by them. Also provide lots of perching places as hummingbirds spend about 80% of the time resting on twigs, clothes lines etc. Provide plants that will supply nesting materials to attract female hummingbirds. They prefer downy nesting material from trees such as eucalyptus and willow and from ferns, mosses and lichens.

Hanging brightly coloured feeders in your garden will attract the hummingbirds. A good ideas is to attach red ribbons that blow around the feeder. It is also a good idea to provide feeders at different heights as hummingbird species have different preferences. Species that favor low growing plants will visit a feeder placed lower while species that feed on taller plants and shrubs will prefer to visit a feeder placed in a higher position. Hummingbirds are also very territorial and one hummingbird may defend a single feeder and prevent others from approaching. Place at least three feeders at different heights around your garden.

Hummingbirds love to bathe in the mist on leaves so you could place a mister close to some broadleaved plants to provide them with a bathing place.

Making Hummingbird Nectar

Make a sweet nectar by mixing together a cup of sugar and four cups of pre-boiled water. Cool and store in the refrigerator. Unused nectar can safely be stored for about a week. Thoroughly clean hummingbird feeders weekly by rinsing with a solution of one cup of vinegar to four cups of water then rinsing with plain water. Fill with the nectar and hang in a shady place. Do not use any food colouring or synthetic sweeteners or honey as it can ferment and produce a fungus that is harmful. Change the nectar in your feeder every three days or more often in hotter weather.

Give the hummingbirds the food they love and a comfortable environment and they will visit your garden often.

Using a Snowblower Safely

Written by JanetAshby on Thursday, September 4th, 2008 in Gardening.

Snowblower and lawnmower accidents account for many severe injuries every year, including loss of fingers and toes, deep cuts, burns, crushed and broken bones. Injuries occur to all age groups but most people affected by these types of injuries are between twenty five and sixty. Here are some basic tips to make sure you are not among them!

Basic Safety Tips

Always read the manual and make sure you know the operating procedures before you even start up your snowblower. Never drink alcohol or take any medication that can impair your judgment before you operate a snowblower, or any other machine. Make sure any safety guides, shields or switch guards are in place and never remove them. Check with your manual for any further information on the safety features of your particular model. When operating the snowblower keep hands and feet away from any moving parts and always ensure that children and pets are at a safe distance. This is particularly important for snowblowers as they can take up and propel small objects a long way at a high speed.

Do not leave the machine running unattended, even for a brief time, always shut off the engine completely. Fill up the gas tank when the engine is cold, never when it is running or hot.

Do not wear loose clothes as they can easily become tangled in moving parts. Snowblowers vary considerably in the noise they make. Electric snowblowers are quiet but gas powered models can be very noisy. It is a good idea to have a pair of ear protectors for use with your snowblower and other machines, such as lawn tractors.

Snowblowers can easily become fouled by twigs and other debris. Do not use your hands to clear the auger or discharge chute. Use a broom handle or other stick. If you know heavy snow is predicted, clearing the area of loose material before it is covered by the snow will make snow clearing much easier.

Snowblowers with gasoline engines have the same risks as other machines so treat them accordingly. Gasoline engines produce toxic fumes so never run the snowblower in an enclosed space, your garage for instance. If you must test out the machine do it in an open area. Store gasoline in approved cans only in a safe place away from the hands of small children.

For electric snowblowers care must be taken to keep the cord away from the moving parts. Always use a cord designed for outdoor use and an outlet that has ground fault interrupting protection.

Maintenance of your Snowblower

Always do a thorough check of your machine at the start of the winter, before the first snow. Gas powered snowblowers need more maintenance than electric models and require the same types of maintenance as your car engine. The oil level and spark plug must be checked regularly and the oil changed at least once a year before the first use of the winter. Check the cord on an electric snowblower. See that it is not frayed or damaged and replace if necessary.

Make sure you do not have to visit the emergency room this coming winter by following all the safety rules!

Taking Care of Your Lawn

Written by Getar on Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008 in Gardening.

Lawns are usually a spot with lots of grass. If you have a lawn as part of your house and lot, what will you do with it? Many people do nothing about it. They just let the soil’s nutrients get wasted with the useless grass. Others simply trim down the grasses to a minimum height. But the worst thing they could do is to use artificial grass. Artificial grass is put above the soil and while it does lessen the work given that they no longer have to take care of it, they’re still wasting good soil. It does look good, but does it pose any use for you? No it doesn’t. You need to fully utilize the lawn that you own. How? It’s time you learn about gardening. Gardening is the solution you need to further beautify your lawn. Here are some advantages that you can get when you try gardening:

First of all, having many plants planted on your lawn will produce fresher air. You may already have known during your grade school years, though you must have forgotten, about the breathing cycle. Humans, and many other mammals, breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide. The plants breathe in the carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen. This is the breathing cycle that we have broken by destroying the plants and trees out there to build those buildings and other structures. If your lawn will have many plants, then you’ll have fresher air to breathe.

Another advantage of gardening is that it greatly beautifies your lawn as compared to useless grass or the artificial grass. If you planted flowers in your lawn, not only would your lawn look beautiful but it will smell good too. Flowers and trees also invite new inhabitants like the cheerfully chirping birds and the bees. Bees, as you may already know, help in the reproduction of flowers so they are actually useful insects.

If you plan to have fresh fruits and vegetables, you can have it for free just by gardening. Once you plant seeds that would produce fruits and vegetables, you are on your way to a healthier living. When you get those fruits and vegetables, they will surely be fresher and much nutritious than that sold in the market given that you know that you took care of the plants with your best. You can eat those fruits and vegetables and thus, get the nutrients that your body needs. The best part here is that you can share your bounty with your good neighbors.

Gardening gives you these advantages. But you have to maintain its health carefully, as many bad insects will try to infect your garden. You have to do a lot of work in order to maintain your garden, and it will be very hard. But your hard work will soon pay off, especially when you get all these benefits to yourself. A beautiful lawn garden can be envied by your neighbors. By then, you simply have to teach them on how to make their own beautiful lawn garden. Teach them and you’ll be helping to create a better world.

Easy Techniques on Apartment Gardening For Beginners

Written by Getar on Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008 in Gardening.

Apartment gardening can be as easy as one pleases even for first time gardeners. Here are some easy and useful techniques to create your gardening tour de force regardless of how little or big a space you have in your apartment:

1. Learn about the basics of gardening, such as the following:

• Start with a good soil. You have to get the kind of soil that grows plant best. Tip: check for soil that easily disintegrates in your hands. Sometimes, you have to use additives like sand, clay, or compost to get the best soil.

• You need to water the plants on an average of 1 inch deep weekly. Tip: water the plants for a longer time, preferably in the morning, with less frequency will make for healthy yield. It is also important that you check on your plants regularly and don’t let them dry out.

• Anticipate pests. You can always pest-proof your garden and make it green and healthy. Use your best judgment whether to go for pesticides (there are several around), or you can always go natural and environment-friendly. Tip: Should you opt for pesticides, be sure to dispose them properly-never down the drain or in the garbage where accidental spilt can occur. To avoid pest problems before they occur, choose plants that are most appropriate for the kind of garden environment that you have.

2. Make sure to devote some time for your plants. Just like any masterpieces, you have to invest time and effort plus tender love and care to nurture your plants. If you can’t do this at the moment, then don’t start with the natural greens, instead you may use artificial plants as stand-in.

3. Find the plants that go best with the kind of environment that you have. If your garden is to be located inside your apartment, you may want to try a spider plant that requires minimal attention, space, and sunlight. Definitely a breeze for beginners. Another plant that is very lenient of apartment living is the leafy Chinese evergreen. It has also the capability to clean the air in your home. There are many other varieties of indoor plants that you can find around. Choose the one that suits your condition most.

4. Bear in mind that even if you have chosen to grow indoor plants that are low maintenance, you will have to give them some attention. Just like any other living things, these are the requisites to grow them healthy: systematic watering, a little bit of feeding, right temperature, occasional spruce up, adequate light, and a dab of moisture.

Always remember that you have to love what you are doing. Plants are like people, show them love and they bloom. They’re attention seekers at time, too. They will be happy if you give them their own space. But no matter how much space you have in your apartment, you can always create your own garden masterpiece, nourish your plants, and help maintain clean, green, and healthy environment.

Enjoy gardening!

Gazebo: An Eye-catching Garden Structure

Written by Getar on Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008 in Gardening.

Many of us love the garden. It is a special place at home that gives us the rejuvenating and calming feeling. Most of the times, it is where we spend special moments with our love ones, or with the entire family. In some other times, it is an ideal place for prayers and meditation.

Aside from parks, where else can we grow and witness different kinds of colorful flowers, like roses, daisies, and tulips? Where else can we adore multihued butterflies, and even observe tiny earth creatures crawling and making their way underground? Indeed, the magical world of the garden is exquisite. It lets us experience the glories of Mother Nature in our very own backyard.

Moms, dads, even the kids like to spend time with the garden. And one of the favorite family past times or hobbies they can have at home is gardening. Nothing compares to the garden life, where you can grow and arrange your flowers, bushes, and other fine-looking plants.

And aside from arranging flowers with different varieties to grow in different spots, to make the garden look more attractive, you must have a gazebo built in it, either in the center or in one of the sides.

But what is a gazebo?

It is usually an octagon-shaped pavilion structure. The purpose of it is to a have a sheltered spot in your garden, especially if you love to have parties, programs, and other recreational activities in there. These structures are commonly found in parks, but many of the houses in the United States, even around the world, are building one within their garden area.

Most people utilize this place for spending some quality t

What Makes Up a Good Mediterranean Garden?

Written by CallieMorris on Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008 in Gardening.

A Mediterranean garden is one of the eye catching gardens that have the look and feel of a European get away even when the garden is located in Southern California. This is a tasteful and colorful type of garden that is found in places like Italy, Spain or Greece with a maraud of colors and old world charm.

The Mediterranean garden also includes things made of stone, concrete or ceramics and can include fountains or ponds that lend a cooling and relaxing atmosphere to the garden. In a true Mediterranean garden there are plants and trees that are of olives, citrus, and vines of grapes, along with Pomegranates. Plants that are found in these gardens are Lavender, Rosemary, Oleanders and even the common Geranium. This garden is usually built upon a mixture of edible herbs and fruits among the color and beauty of flowers to make it an appealing and aromatic place to relax. Relaxation is one of the key features in the Mediterranean garden; this can be from a simple stone bench, a swinging seat or the table located on the stone or brick patio. One thing that is out of place in this garden is wood and metal, this is a garden built on old world charm and not the modern conveniences of today, like the wood that is placed to hold some beds in place or help to raise them.

The most important thing to remember with a garden of this type is to choose the plants that will go into it carefully and be aware of their watering needs. This garden is not located in the climate of Italy, Spain or even the South of France; it is located in a place like Southern California. That means the plants must be able to tolerate the climate in this location successfully to flourish yearly.

These gardens can also include plants like roses that can be found in a huge variety of colors and flower sizes to help compliment the garden in their elegant way. They are a relaxing garden that often have stone or brick pathways winding through them to lend to the Mediterranean feel.

One feature about this type of garden is the aromatic herbs that can be planted such as sage and rosemary that other types of garden might not include, the herbs are ones based on the herbs that can be found in the Mediterranean gardens of Italy or Greece. In the garden it is possible to find a relaxing seat hidden amid the floral and scents of herbs.

While these are lively gardens filled with color and smell they also should include the old world charm that is gained by the use of cement, stone and brick found in these original gardens that are often used to make paths through the garden for a relaxing look of a place to gaze upon the colors and smells.

This is the type of garden that can fit the style of any home and can give the appearance of a warm inviting hideaway.
